Welcome to 2019 and to The Team Evesham Cycling club season! By now many of you have heard that Sandy has stepped down as the club president. I am Humbled to say that he and the board of directors have the confidence in me to take the helm and lead us into the future.
My history with Team Evesham and cycling in my adult year’s dates back to 2010. I had just gotten back into cycling through some coaxing from my longtime friend Jim Sweet. I purchased my first road bike, had done two rides and decided to join Team Evesham on a Sunday ride for my first group ride. I got to meet Sandy, Chuck Nowicki, Dennis Dahms, Brad Davis and a few others that day and I was hooked. We rode the old route to Zena’s cafe in Riverton that day, a day and a ride that I will not forget.
I enjoyed the challenge of riding in a group, the drafting, the wind rushing past my ears as we peddled and took turns riding on the other cyclist’s wheel. It was cold that day and I didn’t even have the proper Cycling kit. I was wearing mountain bike shorts over UnderArmour tights and a red sweatshirt. That didn’t last long as I quickly hit the bike shop for more appropriate gear and a proper kit.
Soon after this I purchased a new lighter, faster Carbon Fiber Bike from our sponsor Danzeisen and Quigley. I became a ride leader, started riding multiple days per week, rode in some charity rides, did some racing, started mountain biking, lost some weight, and met a lot of new friends. I have ridden my bike in many other states including Arizona, South Carolina, North Carolina, Colorado, Utah, Upstate New York, New York City, and Florida. On these rides I have met people from all over the country and world that I still keep in contact with and plan to ride with again. I’m proud to say that this club has changed my life in so many ways and I am very thankful for this.
As we move into 2019 and prepare for the cycling season we look to build on the great team and foundation that Team Evesham already has. We look to continually better the South Jersey cycling community, to advocate for safe cycling on our roadways, promote better health through cycling and build strong lasting friendships. We look to improve our already popular Sunday ride by introducing new routes thanks to Scott Downie and a few others that are helping with our routes and ride committee. We will be bringing back the New Riders Introductory Ride to help introduce more people to cycling an group riding. We will be expanding our hill rides thanks to the leadership of Brett Whartenberg. We will be adding Mountain Biking to our fall and winter cycling season thanks to the passion of Maurice Finerty. I have been talking with Jeff Schneck to create some online “Zwift” rides for when the weather is tool cold and conditions are too bad to ride outside at all. Lastly, we will continue our support of the charity rides that Team Evesham was founded to participate in.
I’m thankful to have a strong and supportive board of directors that shares the same vision that I have for where we want the team to go. To complete our executive board Dennis Dahms has stepped up to take the Vice President Position, Brad Davis is staying on as our secretary, and Lisa Sleeper is staying on as our treasurer. Returning to their board positions are Chuck Nowicki, Scott Downie and Cathy Rosenberg. Joining us this year to round out the board are Geri Phares, Ross Polinow, Leslie Breslau, and Pete D’Antonio. Dave Bennis has attempted to retire from the board, however we have managed to convince him to stay on as an associate member and help us with membership and the website, Thanks Dave! Lastly Kevin Lau will be staying on as our Legal Counsel. With this strong group and the support of all of our committee members and Team Mates I feel that we can accomplish some great things this year!
To help shape our team, the board of directors have developed various committees to help our team run smoothly and to increase our team members experience. A list of these committees will follow this message. Dennis Dahms is heading the committees for us, reach out to Dennis at email@example.com if you would like to be part of the committee and shape the future of Team Evesham.
Please remember to support and promote your team sponsors. Their sponsorship goes a long way into supporting our team and our vision. We Thank Danzeisen and Quigley, Rastelli’s, The Heart House, Advantage Auto Service, Piazza Honda, Republic Bank, Carstar Lakeside Collision, South Jersey Auto Auction, The Mark Mckenna team and Rothman Institute,
Finally, we would like to thank Sandy Student, our team founder, for 10 years of outstanding mentoring and leadership. We will never forget, “In life, it’s not where you go, but who you ride with.”
I look forward to seeing you all on the road, cycling in 2019 and beyond!
