Move for Mental Health Ride

On June 2nd our fellow teammate, Sami Sorid, is hosting her second Move for Mental Health charity ride.  The objective is to promote mental health education and fight the stigma associated with mental illness. (1 in 5 people experience mental health issues.)  The ride will also be supporting a local charity, King’s Crusade, in its goal to conquer the opioid epidemic.

Please join us on June 2nd at Laurel Acres Park in Mount Laurel, NJ.  For more information and to register go to moveformentalhealth.org.

To infinity and beyond!

Best wishes for the New year to all of our teammates and their families. 2018 was our 10th year as an organized team and we celebrated all year with tons of events. This past year we held seminars with Rothman, hosted the Welcome Back Ride, started our No Excuse ride for beginners, staged our first Grill and Chill event and so many other great happenings.
We continued our charity fundraising and eclipsed several milestones too. Again we were one of the top ten fundrasing teams in the Cancer Bridge to the Beach Ride.  Plus we partnered with the Foster 100, and doubled the number of riders in the event. Team Evesham represented more than 20% of the total riders in this ride for veterans.

This year also saw numerous rides being cancelled. 2018 was the wettest year ever in New Jersey with over 64 inches of rain in New Jersey. According to our colleague: Storm Chaser Sandy, this is 20 inches above a normal year.

When 8 people joined together to form the team in 2008 no one envisioned that we would have more than 400 members and that we would contribute more than $1.7 million to charities.
Come help us celebrate so many great things at the upcoming after holiday party on Friday, January 11. Sign up here to attend and remember this is a BYOB event so feel free to bring your favorite adult drinks.

At Team Evesham we are always trying to make our group even better. On behalf of all of our teammates we thank Kevin Comber, Melissa Harris, and Dave Bennis for their many years of service on our Board of Directors.   We are also welcoming 4 new Board Members for 2019. They are:
Leslie Breslau
Ross Polinow
Geri Phares
Peter D’Antonio

Lastly we have even more items in store for 2019 so keep watching for all of the announcements.
See you all at the Party on January 11, the first 75 to register will get special early bird gift.

Give Yourself the Gift of Life

At Team Evesham we believe safety is everyone’s job so we are giving all of our members a 20% discount on RoadID. In our estimation this is the best gift any outdoor enthusiast can buy for themselves. RoadID lists your emergency contact information and key medical concerns. Both of these items are critical for first responders.

This saving is available for our members and it maybe a great time to spread this gift to other family members. We have heard it from several members, my medical info is in my phone or I carry my wallet with me. But when seconds count and first responders need to know immediately, RoadID gives them access to your critical information right on your wrist.

This is limited time discount, you must purchase and use this discount code before December 24. Please take this step to protect yourself and your other family members who are outdoor enthusiasts. The true story about how the company started is the founder was run off the road when he was running.

Here are the details:

Your Team Evesham Road ID Club Discount Coupon code is: 18XAMFK7

This coupon code is good for 20% off of each order placed during the designated 20 day period. This special offer is open to all group members.

Saftey First – Respect the Rain

After a frigid Thanksgiving we were looking forward to a ride on Sunday.  We awoke to a sunny day with temperatures all the way up into the mid-forties. Being optimists, it looked promising.  Unfortunately, the early morning rains left wet and flooded roads.  Taking into consideration the dangers presented by puddles and wet leaves, for the safety of our riders we cancelled the ride.  A few decided to take the risks and ride on their own.  However, they did have to make a few detours

Maybe we’ll have better luck next weekend.

Be sure to save the date for our after holidays team party be on January 11th.   More details are coming soon.

What To Wear in Cold Weather

When riding in these cooler months it is important to dress correctly.  If you are comfortably warm at the start of a ride, you are probably over dressed.  It’s best to be a little cool at the start because you will warm up in a short way into the ride.  But, don’t over do the coolness at the start, or you might be cold through the whole ride.  Below are some tips on dressing properly.

What to Wear When Cycling in Cold Weather
A link to kbcyclewerks.hubpages.com

  • Dressing in Layers
How to Stay Warm on the Bike on Cooler Days
So some well-meaning person tells you that to stay warm in cooler weather, you’ve got to “dress in layers.” Well, what is that supposed to mean? Every time someone talks about layers I think about onions and how starting at the outside, you can see the distinct layers that can be peeled away to gradually expose the core. Layering your clothes follows the same principle, only without the strong smell and all the crying. When you dress in layers, you generally have three different types of clothing on your body, each with a distinct purpose. Let’s walk through them one by one and with each, talk a bit about what you’re trying to accomplish.

    • Base Layer
The base layer is the one closest to your body. Its purpose is to help you stay warm but not get too hot, and most importantly, should serve as a way to carry perspiration away from your core. Think high-tech long underwear. Believe it or not, wool is an excellent material for this, and some synthetic materials are suitable as well.
    • Middle Layer
The purpose of the middle layer is to insulate and at the same time to still continue to move moisture away from your body. This layer is “fluffier” than the base layer if that makes any sense, keeping warmer air in close to your body yet allowing it to still circulate around you so that you don’t get too warm in periods of high activity.Of the three layers, this one will vary the most depending on the temperature and the individual person. In addition to the actual air temp, your level of activity plus the amount of sunlight and wind combined with your level of fitness and metabolism will all factor into how much insulation you will require in this middle layer.Polyester fleece is a good choice for an insulating layer. Wool turtlenecks or vests also work well. Some good examples of middle layer clothing are the Pearl Izumi Woolie Mammoth jersey or the all wool Castelli Armando Long Sleeve Jersey.
    • Outer Shell
The outer shell primarily serves as a windbreaker and also works to thwart any precipitation you may encounter. This layer’s first job is to keep you dry; the warmth you’ll experience comes from what’s underneath. The outer shell should be breathable to help get rid of the moisture you’re generating through perspiration; strategically placed vents (such as under the arms) are a big help to this end. Nylon is the most common material for lightweight outer shell garments; heavier ones are going to be made from GoreTex or another one of the patented fabrics. A lightweight example of this type of outerwear is the Louis Garneau Winddry Jacket; the Pearl Izumi Barrier jacket is one that runs a bit heavier.
    • Enjoy Riding in Any Weather
Every day is a great day for riding when you pair this principle of layers with appropriate coverings for your hands, head and feet. With the right gear you can safely and comfortably ride on days when the temperature dips well below freezing and take your bike out in weather that before you might never have considered for riding.

Cold but Happy

This Sunday we had three ride groups out for a trip to Nixon’s, the gourmet deli of the Pine Barrens.

Team Evesham also was awarded with recognition from the American Cancer Society for our stellar fund raising in the Bridge to the Beach event this past June. We achieved the ninth top fund raising position for 2018.

We also want to wish all of our teammates and their families a joyous celebration this coming Thursday, if the weather forecasts are correct you will need to bundle up to stay warm too.

We are cancelling the Friday ride since it is Black Friday with too many vehicles on the road for safety.  If you do shop be cautious when you drive.

Lastly, we remind you that it is almost summer time in Australia and our favorite mate, Ryan Gaskin is out and leading rides for all of those Team Evesham folks who journey down to visit him. Be sure to ride with Ryan soon.

A few quick reminders:

1) We are looking for folks too join the team Evesham Board of Directors, email Dave Bennis who chairs the nominating committee at dave@teamevesham.org .

2) Our After Holiday Party is scheduled for Friday, January 11, more details to follow.

Red and Yellow made for Happy Fellows

This past Sunday we woke to frost on the windshields and temperatures below freezing, but we still had a dozen hearty “ice cube riders” out for a trip to Murphy’s Market. Folks were climbing into their attics for their winter gear; base layers, booties, and warm jackets were required. Sandy was back from overseas and he complained about the 60 degree colder temperatures.

We also honored Veterans Day and thanked those who served. The freedoms we enjoy in the USA come because others have been brave enough to go into battle to protect our way of life.

Speaking of warmer temperatures on your next overseas trip remember we have Team Evesham, ride leaders in both Australia and Israel. Here is Sharon modeling her ride leader team jersey.

The holidays are approaching and we wanted you to reserve the night of Friday, January 11 2019 for the Team Evesham after holiday party.

With the colder weather here with the possibility of snow on Thursday we wanted to offer you a chance to order the custom Team Evesham winter gear. Click HERE for the Team Voler store. Orders will arrive in January.

Just a Perfect Day

This past Sunday was a perfect day for autumn riding. The sky was clear, little or no wind, and the temperatures while a little cool at the start did warm up for a comfortable ride.  About 40 team members were at Rastelli’s to ride one of the 3 scenic routes out to Pemberton. (49, 41, and 36 miles).  Upon return several rides enjoyed some fine eats and comradery in Rastelli Market Fresh.

Hopefully we will have more days like that before year end, and you’ll be riding with us.

Our sponsor, Danzeisen & Quigley is offering a special on bike fit and tune-up.  It’s a good opportunity to get your bike in top shape for the late autumn and early winter riding season.

A Ride For The Goblins

This past Sunday was our Halloween ride.  The weather with dark clouds and chilly temperatures set the stage for a possibly spooky ride. Several of our in the “spirit” riders came in costume, those with the best costumes received prizes.  Congratulations to Mike, Matt, VA and Geri.

Did I mention spooky?  The second stop was at VA’s for the Haunted Porch and Yard Tour.  We promoted this a few weeks ago.  VA hosts it each year to raise funds to fight cancer.  (See photos below.)

Last chance to order Team Evesham gear from Voler and receive it before the Holidays.  The online store is now open, but it will be  closing on November 5th.  Items ordered will ship by December 14th.  Go to Team Store to order.

Save the date – Friday, January 11th , we will be having a annual after-holiday party.
