Who would have thought that in my 60’s I would start group riding! My son, Craig a/k/a Hercules, was the one who encouraged me to. I was riding around the neighborhood on my purple hybrid with a nice large comfy seat and never using any gears. I bought and loved my new bike until I tried to ride it. I was wobbling all over the place and finding everything about it awful. All I could think was what have I done! How was I ever going to do this? But I kept practicing (and listening to Craig) and got to the point of my first group ride with Team Evesham in June 2012. I was totally overwhelmed when I saw all the riders dressed in their gear and terrified I wouldn’t be able to finish the beginner C ride. Two friends took turns staying by my side and I finished the ride – and I was hooked. I wasn’t going to ride in circles anymore! Even though this was the most challenging (and scary) thing I’d ever done, I wanted to keep riding. Everyone was supportive – especially the C ride leaders – Dave and Phil, with Dennis riding sweep – and all the others who stayed me with me and encouraged me. The day I didn’t stagger in last on the ride was a victory. The day I did my first MS ride and rode into Ocean City with Sandy leading us was awesome.
I’m in better shape now than I was in my 40’s – thanks to a bicycle. I’ve met wonderful people and made new friends – and seen parts of New Jersey I never thought existed. I could never do this on my own. I truly am enjoying the ride.
