If you come to my shop to have your car repaired I will have you sign an authorization to repair your car and have you initial payment options for when your car is finished. It will state on that form NO PERSONAL CHECKS. One day I had a nice gentleman come in to pick up his car and tried to pay with a personal check and he was upset that I would not accept it. Now this guy was a smooth talker and claimed to be an outstanding citizen in the town I grew up in. We talked for a little bit and he complimented me on how clean and seemingly well run my shop was and somehow we got on the topic of bicycles. I told him that I like to ride to work once in a while and participate in a few charity rides through the year. He told me that he runs a club called Team Evesham and that I should come out and ride with them one Sunday. I don’t remember exactly if accepted his personal check or not but that was the first time I met Sandy Student.
It was a cold February Sunday that I came out for my first Team Evesham ride. There were about 30 riders that day. Sandy had everyone introduce themselves and it was funny that most of them were named Dave. I blended in well. We split into 3 groups. I went out with the first group. It was an A level ride that was supposed to be about 20 mph. I was only able to stay on the back until the rest stop at The Olde World Bakery. I rode back to The Promenade with the B group. This was better because I could actually talk to the other riders, not just ride as fast as possible and be out of breath. When we got back everyone complimented each other on their riding skills. I thought this was a great group of people and I should look into riding with them more.
Now most of you know me as the guy who leads the B+ ride and can change a flat faster than most others. That is because bicycles have always been a part of my life. When I was a kid I rode my bike everywhere. I used one when I started my paper route at the age of 10. I then started racing BMX for years, and became a New Jersey State Champion, and eventually turning pro and traveling around the country. I even had a job at Action Wheels bike shop. It was there that I learned a lot about running a successful business from Jim and Patty Woodworth.
I will leave you with 3 things you probably don’t know about me:
- I don’t drink alcohol.
- I will not eat seafood.
- I am a chocoholic. If you leave your chocolate unattended I will eat it and have no regrets.
