I remember receiving my first bike when I was six years old. It cost a whopping five dollars and came from a second hand shop in northeast Philly. It had fat tires and was super heavy but I rode it with my friends all over the neighborhood during the summer break from school. As with most things, marriage, a child, and work took precedence and cycling became a fond memory. Fast forward to 1995 and a new phase of my life. I had just re-married, moved to New Jersey, and was finishing up my graduate degree. Eric, known to some, as “Geri’s husband,” was an avid rider and I was interested in getting on the bike again – I thought, how hard could it be? I started out on a new Trek hybrid and it was tough. For one thing, the passing cars unnerved me and the years that had passed without riding had taken their toll. My legs were like lead and I thought I would keel over after a five mile ride! My perseverance along with going on longer rides helped me become a stronger cyclist and I began to enjoy our rides. I was hooked.
A few years ago, during an Internet search, my husband stumbled upon a ride group named Team Evesham. After some coaxing, I agreed that I would ride with the group on one of their Friday rides. Our very first ride leader was Ross Polinow and he was great! Everyone was so friendly and welcomed us to the team. After a few rides we enjoyed it so much we have been riding with Team Evesham ever since. We look forward to our Sunday rides with the team and enjoy the camaraderie with the group in Rastelli’s after the ride.
Cycling has become such an important part of our lives that we began to work it into our vacations. Eric and I realized that it was a wonderful way to see a country and experience the local culture. Over the past ten years we have cycled through the beautiful countryside in Scotland, were soaked during many rainy days in Ireland, and pedaled through fragrant olive groves in Pulgia, Italy. Our next vacation will be a Rhine River cruise and bike tour. We will be visiting four countries, Switzerland, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Stay tuned – you may see even a few pictures of us in our Team Evesham jerseys during our tour.
