When Sandy Student came to me and asked for me to write why I ride, I was quite reluctant; I am not one for being in the spotlight and I like to maintain my anonymity. Yet Sandy’s words lingered with me until I finally had to say why not? So here I go…
About fifteen years ago I was introduced to my first spin class. I was also encouraged to get outdoors and hit the pavement on a bike. I loved them both right away, so much so I became a spin class instructor and biked all the time. Alas, work and life got in the way so my endeavors and biking sat dormant in a garage for almost seven years. Then serendipity intervened and I moved back home. I just happened to see a local posting for local rides by this “Team Evesham” which I noticed was close to my home. Being me, I was quite reluctant to go but I wanted to get back on a bike, so I went to my first TE ride and there I met such wonderful people whom helped push me down a new and not so unfamiliar path. Now I am on a new bike pushing myself further than I’ve ever gone before all the time. I’m becoming a better rider, taking on new challenges and making new friends.
There’s this specific moment we all face in life; it’s the moment you decide whether to face your fears or retreat from them. It’s a battle of determination, will, and of spirit. Where would I would be if had met those moments with “What if I can’t?” How would that shape the rest my life, or any of our lives? What if we use our bikes to not only train our minds but our passions and to encourage others? This is what biking does for me. I’ve accomplished many new challenges this year and I could not have done them if not with the help and encouragement of my fellow riders; they encourage me to be better. The bonds I’ve made on this team are more than just a morning ride; they make me feel part of something greater. If you can encourage just one person to try riding a bike, that’s one more life positively changed forever like I was.
So now that you know my story and we’re all friends, I can tell you the real story of why I ride ……right?
I hate running!! See you on the road
